July 3 Earthquake Park

I walked around Earthquake Park, which is out by the big airport and took pictures of downtown from the park. The park is a memorial to a 9.2 Richter Scale earthquake that hit Alaska on March 27, 1964. The epicenter was in Prince William Sound. I read about Valdez – the quake resulted in gas spills there, + which caught on fire, + which was then followed up with some tsunami action = large burning waves. I guess you probably had to be there for the full effect! Note how hazy the sky is in the pictures! There are the Chugach Mountains behind the city, but you’ll have to peer to see them. There are a significant amount of wildfires this year. It’s very dry. Last summer wasn’t summer, from what I hear, there was so much rain and cool temperatures. Very different from this year. There’s a also picture of downtown Anchorage – with a billboard for FURS and mural of a dog sled team, taken at about 10pm.
